NIGHT WITH INDUSTRY PROS Bowie State University's PRSSA had a successful event that allowed students and professionals to network. Seven elite PR, fashion, and entertainment professionals supported our university's chapter of PRSSA Night with the Industry Pros event. Students were able to listen as the panelists discussed the do's and don'ts of the professional world. Panelists were able to go into detail and support their pieces of advice by giving personal experiences and insights on resume building, internships, community building and volunteer work, as well as the easy ways to get your foot in the door. The professionals in attendance were Joe Clair of the WPGC's Joe Clair Morning Show; Cordelia Cranshaw of Miss District of Columbia 2019; Maggy Francois of Bowie State University; Laura Foos of Foos Financial Services and DC Salon Couture; Tressa "Azarel" Small wood of MegaMind Media; Carla Watson of CRW Solutions; and Jasmine Butler of Jasmine Butler Events.
3RD ANNUAL PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING EVENT APR was excited to work with Bowie States Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter on their 3rd Annual Networking Event. This event is designed to help students make connections in the Public Relations field and get a chance to hear the journey of professionals, as well as receive any tips or advice that they have to offer. The professionals and students that have participated in the event before have found the event to be very helpful. Our goal for this year’s event was to increase the number of professionals and students that attended the event. We also wanted to assure that we had a variation of professionals' that came from different fields such as fashion, sports and corporate. We increased the number of professionals that attended by 44%. Due to the increase of professionals, students obtained a number of internships and made lifelong connections in their respective fields. Overall, this year’s event was a success and we look forward to working with the client again in the future.
Panel Discussion With PR Interns Public Relations interns who work at competitive PR firms shared their internship experiences and tips with those who joined the BSUPRSSA zoom event, Thursday, April 22, 2021. Three of the panelists were Bowie State University students: Tamia Williams (Greentarget), Nikko Butler (Greentarget), and Tiffani Bogan (Finn Partners Internship Mentoring Diversity program). Panelist Cathline Jean (Ogilvy Cambridge), attended Northeastern University.
The SPR PRSSA team supported BSUPRSSA in hosting the hour-long event which also highlighted the moderator skills of the chapter's president and vice president, Jordan Anderson and Kamauri Winder.
2ND ANNUAL PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING EVENT Bowie State University’s Second Annual PRSSA event was a great success. Thirteen of the most elite PR professionals supported our university’s chapter of PRSSA networking event. Students engaged in in-depth conversations with these professionals. They sought out information about resume building, internships, and frequently asked questions like, how they began their careers, where they are now, and how students can achieve success. Carter Solutions; LaDonna M. Smith of PG Valor Basketball; Karen Campbell and Shelby McRae of PGC MD Office of Communications; and Alexandria Crenshaw and Taren Henry of Isom Global Strategies.
PRSSA PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING EVENT On November 20, 2014, the APR Group coordinated an event for its client, the Bowie State University PRSSA chapter. It took place in the New Student Center located on the university’s campus. Public relations professionals met with students to provide them with information on breaking into the field. They also reviewed resumes and portfolios as well as discussed internships and positions available at their firms. PRSSA chapter President Christen Vereen and Vice President Alexandria Crenshaw, along with APR students Brije Smith, Shayla Lightfoot, Andrea Rorer, and MaryAnn Jackson hosted the event.
COMMIT TO BE FIT VIDEO This video has been created to show and explain the great benefits one can obtain by merely just walking. Incorporated are different types of walking such as up-hill, down-hill, running, and even walking on a treadmill. Staying fit and healthy is very important and something as simple as walking isn’t always appreciated.
COMMIT TO BE FIT YOGA SESSION On November 7, 2013, the APR Group planned and hosted a yoga session in the Theodore McKeldin Gym for their client, the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). The fraternity Omega Psi Phi joined in the partnership. The yoga session was part of PRSSA’s fitness campaign launched earlier in the semester.
Instructor Tamisha Jackson taught participants intermediate yoga stretches while they listened to soothing music.
COMMIT TO BE FIT! The APR Group coordinated and hosted a walk October 2013 to encourage Bowie State University students to stay healthy by exercising. The walk was part of it's client's (PRSSA) "Commit To Be Fit" fitness campaign.
BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY ZUMBA The APR Group worked with our client PRSSA to create a fun and successful event at Bowie State University on Thursday, April 18, 2013. In the racquetball room of the Leonidas James Gym on campus, the event was free and open to the students. The purpose was to create an exercise event to help students de-stress after midterms and encourage them to be pro-active in exercising. “Ditch the workout, join the party” was the slogan used to promote the event and invite the students.
GIRL SCOUTS On April 17, 2013, the APR Group planned and facilitated a Girl Scouts information session at Bowie State University. About eight students attended who were interested in becoming a young leader for the Girl Scouts. The speakers included our client, Whitney, who is the field director for the Girl Scouts Washington, D.C. office, and Chantae, a student from Howard University who serves as a Young Leader. She has been a Young Leader since her sophomore year, and she was able to speak to the girls from a firsthand perspective. The girls seemed excited to hear t about Young Leaders program.
HIGH SCHOOL DISCUSSION PANEL A discussion panel was among the spring semester events hosted by the APR Group. Presented in April 2013, the discussed was targeted to soon-to-be-rising seniors. It was designed to encourage high school students to apply to Bowie State and serve as an information session for transfer students and college students who had not decided on a major. Some of the topics that were discussed included applying for college (financial aid, grants, and scholarships); BSU majors, minors, and concentrations; drug awareness; and on-campus/off-campus living.
GIRLTREK Bowie State students, their friends, and others came together on March 10, 2013, for a walk to raise awareness about the role walking plays in staying healthy for African American women and girls. The 100-minute walk took place around the campus. The APR Group coordinated the event for its client PRSSA.
SENIOR APPRECIATION DAY: CELEBRATING NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE Members of BSU PRSSA chapter showed their appreciation for Native American Heritage during an event facilitated by the APR group. It was held at the Heartsfield Assisted Living Home on November 13, 2012. The group involved the senior citizens as a way to perform community service to the residents, and present a program that they would enjoy. Among the activities were traditional storytelling, pumpkin carving and cultural music was played to set the atmosphere for those in attendance.
"IS COLLEGE REALLY WORTH IT?" APR Group Team leader Tamika Payton (pictured in the purple shirt) coordinated a panel discussion, entitled “Is College Really Worth It?” on October 23, 2012, inside the Wiseman Student Centre game room, located on campus. Approximately 20 students attended the event. Panelists agreed college is still a worthy goal to pursue, despite the weak economy. An objective for the event was to promote PRSSA, the APR Group client, with the goal of increasing membership as well as exercising service to the university.
CAMPUS VOTER REGISTRATION EVENT On October 4, 2012, the APR Group hosted a registration booth for Bowie State students to register to vote and learn about PRSSA. During the registration process students who registered or signed up for PRSSA were eligible to win a raffle drawing for a $50 Visa Card.

HOOD TALK PANEL DISCUSSION On November 11th, the APR Group planned and hosted an event called Hood Talk which took place in the Center for Learning and Technology on Bowie State University’s campus. During this event, panelists Angie Ange of 93.9 WKYS, community resident Roger Rudder, graduate student Aaron Carter and undergraduate student Kordae May presented their views about derogatory terms. There was a lot of participation from the audience of about 40 people. It was hosted by APR student and amateur comedian Christian Smith.
